The natural monument basalt crater Blauer Stein is a former quarry west of the Windeck district of Kuchhausen in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The basalt deposit is located on an oval area about 100 meters long and is considered an isolated extension of the basalt volcanism in the Westerwald.
In the Miocene, lava erupted extensively in the Westerwald and formed closed basalt covers in most places, while near Kuchhausen magma broke through the bedrock in a vent and the lava got stuck in the funnel-shaped vent, where it solidified into the angular columns of basalt. In the 1970s, the "Blue Stone" basalt crater became a tourist destination, which was designated as a protected part of the landscape in 1986.
